SIGNAL AND NETWORK

WHAT AFFECTS CELLAED® CONNECTIVITY?

Being a CellAED for lifeTM Member offers the benefit of receiving monthly updates on the battery status and temperature condition of your CellAED®. These updates occur if your CellAED® is within 2G/3G network range, depending on which country you are in.

If a cellular network is unavailable due to service outages or your CellAED® is in an area with no or low signal, your device will not be able to communicate. In Australia, network providers are progressively switching off the 3G network with this expected to be fully switched off by September 2024, after which, your CellAED® will no longer communicate data updates. In other countries, such as NZ and the UK, support for 2G/3G networks will remain for longer.

Please note, a cellular network connection is not required for your CellAED® to function as a life- saving defibrillator.

WILL THE 3G SHUTDOWN AFFECT MY CELLAED®?

Please note, a cellular network connection is not required for your CellAED® to function as a life-saving defibrillator.

A benefit of being a CellAED for lifeTM Member includes monthly updates on battery status and temperature storage conditions. This data is currently communicated to us via the 3G network, which we then share with our CellAED for lifeTM members.

Provided CellAED® is within range, it will continue to transmit monthly battery and temperature data via the 3G network until September 2024 in Australia, after which it is scheduled to be shut down. In other countries, such as New Zealand and the UK, support for 2G and 3G networks will continue for longer.

In the meantime, our product engineering team are working on future iterations of CellAED® to make best practical use of existing and future networking capabilities within the countries we distribute.

CAN I TRAVEL WITH MY CELLAED®?

Yes. CellAED® can be taken with you, locally or internationally, for personal use only. If you’re planning to travel by air, pack your CellAED® into your hand luggage. Please check with the airline regulations prior to taking CellAED® with you.

If you’re planning to travel in a car, please make sure you don't leave your CellAED® unattended in the car where it could be exposed to extreme temperatures; treat it like your personal belongings and take it with you so you are prepared to respond if you witness a sudden cardiac arrest.

Please note, a cellular network connection is not required for your CellAED® to function as a life- saving defibrillator.

DOES MY CELLED® NEED A CELLULAR CONNECTION?

A cellular network connection is not required for your CellAED® to function as a life-saving defibrillator.

IF CELLULAR FREQUENCIES CHANGE, WILL THIS IMPACT MY DEVICE?

CellAED® is compatible with the local cellular networks within Australia and the frequency bands used in other approved regions for sale. CellAED® has been tested for cellular compatibility just like your mobile phone.

Network technologies, however, can change as telecommunication companies evolve their infrastructure. We work closely with our carriers and telecommunication partners to ensure the best possible coverage and service.

WHAT CELLULAR NETWORK DOES MY CELLAED® USE?

Depending on which country you are in, CellAED® communicates via 2G or 3G cellular networks.

Check with your local telecommunication company for further information on which cellular networks are available.

HOW DOES CELLAED® COMMUNICATE?

Your CellAED® has an in-built cellular modem which connects to a direct point-to-point connection from your device to the manufacturer over an encrypted connection to provide device status information. This information includes status summary of your CellAED® temperature, battery condition, serial number, and internal information such as firmware version and cellular network info. HAS IT GOT THE ABILITY TO USE GPS TO DETERMINE LOCATION?

No, your CellAED® does not use GPS functionality.

DOES IT HAVE ANY AUDIO RECORDING ABILITY?

No, your CellAED® does not have any audio recording hardware. It doesn’t have the ability to record audio.

CELLAED® IN USE

HOW DOES CELLAED® KNOW WHEN A SHOCK IS REQUIRED?

CellAED® has been designed to make all the decisions for you after you SNAP your CellAED®, which will start voice instructions. CellAED® will tell you what to do every step of the way and when the pads are applied to the person’s bare chest, CellAED® immediately begins analysing the heart rhythm and will only deliver a shock if a heart rhythm associated with sudden cardiac arrest is detected. So, don’t hesitate to use your CellAED® on a person who’s unconscious and not breathing or not breathing normally.

CAN CELLAED® BE USED ON A PERSON WITH A PACEMAKER?

Yes, CellAED® can be used on a person with a pacemaker. A pacemaker is usually located just under the skin below the collarbone on the upper left side of the chest and will therefore not interfere with CellAED® pad placement. However, sometimes for medical reasons the pacemaker may need to be located on the right side of the body just under the collarbone. If this is the case, please stick the pad below this area. AVOID PLACING THE PADS DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THE PACEMAKER.

DO YOU REQUIRE A PRESCRIPTION FROM A DOCTOR PRIOR TO PURCHASING A CELLAED®?

No, CellAED® doesn't need a prescription.

SHOULD I BUY A CELLAED® IF I LIVE ALONE?

When someone experiences a sudden cardiac arrest they will drop suddenly and immediately fall unconscious. They won’t be able to apply a defibrillator on themself.

If you live alone, you and your visitors can still have peace of mind and be prepared with a CellAED® in the house. CellAED® is also ultraportable and you can easily take it with you!

CAN YOU PERFORM CPR WHILE CELLAED® IS ANALYSING THE HEART RHYTHM?

No, CellAED® requires hands to remain off the patient whilst analysing the heart rhythm.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF/WHEN TO CARRY OUT CPR?

CellAED® is designed so you as the user don’t have to make decisions about whether the patient has a normal heart rhythm or not. It’s a fully-automatic AED (automated external defibrillator), meaning the user simply follows the voice instructions of your CellAED®.

CellAED® analyses the heart rhythm at the end of the CPR cycle and will only deliver a shock if there is a shockable rhythm present (ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia). If there’s not a shockable rhythm present, your CellAED® will always advise to start CPR (which is vital to continue to deliver oxygenated blood around the body).

Ultimately if the patient wakes up, they are most likely to display signs such as verbal or physical movement to let you know CPR is uncomfortable and to stop.

We recommend CellAED® should remain on the patient until instructed to remove from a trained medical professional.

HOW MANY SHOCKS IS CELLAED® CAPABLE OF?

CellAED® is designed for use in a single sudden cardiac event and is pre-programmed to operate up to 20 defibrillation cycles (approximately 45 minutes of operation time)

JOULES?

The revolutionary and patented technology of CellAED® uses up to 85 joules, which is significantly less energy to deliver an equivalent shock of a traditional AED.

By redesigning how AEDs use energy to deliver a shock, CellAED® is a personal AED that uses less energy (joules) to deliver a shock (current) that is equivalent to that of conventional AEDs.
Biphasic defibrillators work by delivering current in two phases, each with a different direction of current flow between the electrode pads for a specific time interval.

Most conventional biphasic defibrillators store their energy within a single high voltage capacitor, which delivers an uneven (70/30) waveform across these phases. This requires higher total energy (typically 120 – 150 joules) to ensure phase 2 remains powerful enough to complete defibrillation.

In contrast, CellAED® uses multiple capacitors, enabling each phase of the waveform to have independent energy storage, delivering a balanced 50/50 dual waveform across both phases. For this reason, CellAED® requires fewer joules (approximatley75 joules) to ensure phase 2 remains powerful enough to deliver an effective shock.

Comparing different AEDs based on their energy usage (joules) is not a comparison of the effectiveness of their therapy. This is because the shape and the duration of the waveform can differ between AEDs, and even AEDs of the same energy.

The most critical factor in determining shock effectiveness is the electrical current that flows through the heart. It is current, not energy that determines effective defibrillation.

IS IT AUTOMATIC OR SEMI-AUTOMATIC AND IS IT EASY TO USE?

CellAED® is a fully automatic AED (automated external defibrillator) which does not require you to push any buttons to deliver a shock.

It's easy to use in 3 easy steps: Snap...Peel...Stick®

CellAED® is powered on by snapping in half along the perforated centre line. This will automatically start the voice instructions, guiding you every step of the way through the CPR and defibrillation cycle.

CAN CELLAED® BE USED ON CHILDREN/TODDLERS?

Yes, CellAED® has an infant button located on the front of the device for use on infants weighing less than 10 kg (22lb). When this button is pressed, the voice instructions will start and guide you step-by- step.

CARRYING OUT CPR ON AN INFANT (LESS THEN 10KG)

For infants weighing less than 10kgs, remove the CellAED® pad on the front of the chest and use two fingers over the centre of the chest when instructed to do so by the voice instructions on the device. Push down to a depth of no more than one third of the infant's chest cavity to the rhythm of the beeps on the CellAED®.

DOES CELLAED® GIVE A DIFFERENT CHARGE FOR AN 11KG PAEDIATRIC COMPARED TO AN 80KG ADULT? IF SO, HOW DOES IT DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE?

CellAED® will reduce its output therapy when placed in infant mode. The voice instructions will tell you when it’s the right time to press the infant button. The therapy provided by your CellAED® will vary slightly due to patient differences, such as the size of the patient’s chest.

WHAT IS THE SHOCK DELIVERY TIME?

When your CellAED® has been snapped, applied to a patient, and recognised a shockable rhythm, your CellAED® will start charging and deliver a life-saving shock within the next 30 seconds. Voice instructions will instruct you to not touch the patient and stand clear for shock.

CAN MY CELLAED® BE USED ON SOMEONE WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AF)?

CellAED® can be used on someone experiencing cardiac arrest who has a history of atrial fibrillation in the past. Once CellAED® is on the patient’s bare chest it carries out a heart rhythm analysis to determine if a shockable heart rhythm is present. CellAED® is designed to only deliver a shock if it detects either ventricular fibrillation (VF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT).

I NOTICED THE PAD PLACEMENT IS UNDER THE LEFT NIPPLE ISN’T OPTIMAL AND CORRECT PAD PLACEMENT SHOULD BE MID AXILLA ON THE LEFT SIDE. IS THE PAD PLACEMENT DUE TO LIMITATIONS OF THE DESIGN?

As you’re probably aware, optimal pad placement receives a lot of discussion within the resuscitation community and the most recent update from the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines for advanced life support (Soar et al., 2021) state “there is no new evidence since the 2015 guidelines regarding optimal defibrillation pad position” and that “no human studies have evaluated pad position as a determinant of ROSC or survival from VF/pVT.”

Rapid Response Revival, the manufacture, continue to support organisations such as Ambulance Victoria and St John New Zealand, with a view to supplementing the formal body of research to improve the survival rate of OHCA.
